EASE INTO THE EMPTY NEST

(with less obligation, and more inspiration!)

Dear Moms,

When we had our first, we wondered… at what age should we start on solid foods? Was it time to start setting up play dates? And most of all, when would we get our time and our minds back? Every time we figured out the answer to the first question, another one came close behind.

It turns out that us moms (especially those of us in Gen X) have spent a humongous amount of brain and heart power over the past 15-20 years on our beloved kids.

We’ve Agonized. we’ve organized. We’ve cheered.

we’ve worried. we’ve comforted.

And you know what’s going to happen next?

Yep, they’re going to leave us. Just as we planned.

And when they do, we’re going to have to figure out, when we first walk into the grocery store to buy food for.. gasp… OURSELVES… what it is exactly that we like to EAT.

We may look at our partners of many years and wonder, “Who is THAT?”

We may feel a shift in our bodies, our careers, and yes, our homes. We need to connect the dots again, so we can feel whole.

The “empty nest syndrome” looks a little different for each of us. No matter who we are, it’s likely to be a mixed bag.

So why am I so passionate about this?

I am a mom who did all the things… volunteered for the PTA, stayed at home, got parent-obsessed with competitive sports, worked part time, ran the booster club, worked full time outside the home, and changed my email address to include the word “mama.” That’s how caught up I have been. And I’ve loved it. Well, MOST of it.

I started out writing poetry and teaching preschool, and then worked in publishing, media and sales. In 2016, I became a certified life coach.

The older I get, the more convinced I am: the toughest (and most meaningful) phases of life are best experienced in a community. we don’t have to do it alone.

Easing into the Empty Nest is designed to help us moms understand what’s happening to us, what helps, and how we can remember the women we are. So we can begin to imagine who we still want to be, in our careers, our families, and our communities.

If you are anticipating an empty nest or adjusting to one, I can help! As one client said:

“ALISSA HAS A BALANCED COACHING STYLE: SHE ASKS QUESTIONS TO DRILL DOWN ON IMPORTANT ISSUES, SHE REFLECTS BACK SO HER CLIENT CAN BETTER UNDERSTAND AND EXAMINE THEse issues, AND SHE POSITIVELY FRAMES ISSUES TO SHOW HOW APPROACHABLE A TRANSITION MAY BE. IN EACH COACHING SESSION, I APPRECIATED ALISSA’S FRANK FEEDBACK, PRAGMATISM, AND HER EMPATHY AND SUPPORT.”

This group is for you if You:

  • Will be sending, or have sent, a kid out of the house within two years. (Bonus points if all of them are already flown.) If you’ve gone on a college visit, you are eligible!

  • Are willing to learn and grow. You can admit it… you don’t quite have this empty nest thing all figured out.

  • Have a healthy sense of humor.

  • Can do technology. We’ll be meeting via teleconference, so you need a phone and/or a laptop or a computer with a camera. It isn’t hard—I’ll be happy to walk you through it.

  • Are willing to look honestly at yourself and the areas of your life you want to change, or at least learn more about.

  • Are feeling (or even behaving) a little out of sorts, because of all of the above.

This group is Not for you if you:

  • Are looking for explicit parenting advice.

  • Have it all figured out, and want to hear yourself… share your expert knowledge with all the others.

  • Believe that a higher power will show you the way, without much action on your part.

  • Are facing a serious challenge with your behavioral or physical health, or that of your child. While I have great sympathy for that situation, this group will likely be a poor fit if you are, understandably, focused on other pressing concerns.

Here’s what you can expect if you join us.

    • You’ll leave with a clear sense of who you want to be in this next phase of life, and you’ll have some tangible steps to get there. We’ll explore changes in relationships, roles, routines, and more—and you’ll get a window into the lives of some other awesome women to find out their secrets.

    • You’ll meet one-on-one with me once at the start of the program. (The first 5 participants to sign up will get a FREE bonus coaching session.) Then, we’ll start with a 3-hour virtual retreat on May 29 and meet weekly thereafter. I’ll share information in each session and assign “homework” between sessions.

    • I’ll support you and be there for you. I will challenge you and push on your limiting beliefs about who you have been, and most of all.. who you are going to be.

    • We will all be there for each other! The group will be limited to a “flock” of 10 moms to ensure individual attention and healthy group dynamics. We’ll stay connected via Facebook during our process and after the group is done, so you’ll have built-in support.
