FAQ’s

Can I stay with my sister/friend?

Yes! After you register, you’ll be asked about your roommate preferences, including whether you snore :) . It’s usually very easy to place you with at least one or two others you prefer in a bunk room. While all rooms are shared, we have a few more private (but still rustic) options. You can even bring a tent or a camper if you prefer!

Where is the retreat, and how far is it from the airport?

Camp Shady Brook is a beautiful YMCA camp near Sedalia, Colorado. The South Platte River is nearby, and it’s situated in the woods with hiking trails and its own lake on site. It’s about a one hour, 39 minute drive from Denver International Airport to Camp Shady Brook. We can help coordinate airport transportation if needed—this may require an additional fee.

If you are coming from out of town, bedding can be provided by camp to make your packing easier.

What will the weather be like?

Temperatures in September at camp are typically between 50 and 80 degrees. Evenings and mornings will likely be a bit chilly. The weather changes quickly, so bring lots of comfortable layers, a warm sleeping bag and a warm jacket. VERY comfortable shoes, one pair of sturdy slip-on shoes (not flip flops). Rain is possible, but not typical, at this time of year.

What is the food like?

We’ll serve healthy, fresh, plentiful meals and use local, organic produce whenever possible. Lots of coffee, tea, and snacks will be available all day. Special needs, including gluten free, vegetarian, paleo, etc. will be accommodated. We’ll also have snacks, coffee, tea and water available throughout the day. You can let us know about your preferences, allergies, and special needs after you register.

What are my lodging options?

Included lodging is in shared bunk rooms (see image below). Linens are not included but can be provided for an additional fee. Bring a pillow and a warm sleeping bag. We will sleep on bottom bunks only. Bathrooms may be attached to your room, or you may need to walk a short distance to a bathroom.

Am I expected to attend all the group events?

This is your retreat, so that is completely up to you! If you prefer to nap, take a hike, or spend time alone, more power to you! Our priority is you. This is not a time to feel obligated to do anything at all.

That said, refunds won’t be given on any of your fees if you don’t attend a workshop.

What if I register and then have to cancel?

If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible. Until June 30, 2023, refunds (minus non-refundable deposit) will be given if you need to cancel and are unable to send a friend in your place.

After June 30, no refunds will be given. You are welcome to send someone else in your place and have her reimburse you. See below for more details.

How do I sign up for special services?

We will finalize our schedule in June and ask you to sign up then. Plenty of notice will be given for the registration date. We’ll make every effort to accommodate your preferences. We will arrange the scheduling and payment for personal services prior to the start of camp.

How do I select my workshops?

Everyone will be enrolled in most workshops. If you choose not to attend, you’ll have some free time.

What’s the story with the maker’s market?

Our event attracts lots of entrepreneurial and creative women. If you have homemade things you would like to barter or sell at camp, please bring them! Last time we had books, honey, scarves, luggage tags, prints, jewelry, bags, notecards, plants… you name it! We will have some tables set up so your fellow retreaters can view your offerings. We usually use venmo to pay one another, or we make exchanges. This is a great opportunity to shop for gifts. There is no obligation to participate!
